Trying to get your site displayed well in search engines is a task that most people will never master and will take many years for most to fully understand, the main reason being search engines are constantly changing the way they index websites and thus your website may one day be top ten and the next be outside of the top ten.
Getting your website search engine friendly is a long process but must be one that starts right at the beginning of your website being designed, constant work after this is necessary.
One of the main ways to make your site search engine friendly is to get your pages' title tags correct, although many search engines will not admit it bar a few the title tag has a lot of weight in how well your website will index.
Make sure you enter a relative title to your websites' content, the amount of websites that simply have "welcome" or "thankyou for visiting", I have even seen "untitled document" where a title has not been specified at all, these websites are missing out on huge amounts of traffic just because of that.
You should aim to use your company name as this is what people may be searching for, also keywords in relation to your companies products or services should be used. A not very good title would just state "our products page", this does not include company name or actual product keywords, a much better example would be something more along the lines of "Alpha stationery: pens, paper, biros, shredders and more, get in on our stationery sale now", this title is better as it uses the company name "Alpha", uses keywords related to stationery and also uses the word stationery twice, therefore anyone searching for stationery is much more likely to come across that website than another website that has the title "Kens stationery".
Content is the other way to get your website displayed well in search engines, a few years ago META tags carried a lot of weight with search engines however due to webmasters abusing them these now carry very little weight. Search engines now focus more and more on a sites content for how to display it in the search results. You wil need to include relative content with keywords that are also relative, using MP3 for a site that has nothing to do with this will unlikely make a good rank and may even be rejected for indexing full stop. Don't cram your pages full of keywords but spread them out evenly over good relative content, this may take a long time and will need to planned carefully.
For example a good paragraph for a car accessories site may be:
"Welcome to Harrison auto parts, here we have car accessories and parts for a range of vehicles including BMW, Ford, Vauxhall, Renault, Volkswagen and many more. Please select your vehicle type on the left and then select a car accessory or auto part."
A bad paragraph would be.
"Welcome to our car parts website, please select a vehicle down the left and then search through our accessories and auto parts."
Don't cluster lots of keywords together and remember to keep the content, Meta tags, page titles and page content relative to your website topic, also avoid spammer techniques such as hiding keywords in background colours as search engines will pick up on this and not index the website at all.
Follow the above steps and you are well on the way to creating a good search engine friendly website.
