Internet Marketing During The Economic Downturn

Bookmark and Share

By Craig Deane, Blue Ice Web Design Limited

The current state of the economy is by many assumed to be the worst for a long time, numerous companies are going out of business every day because of it and it doesn’t seem like a week can go by without the mention on the news of another large company falling victim to the economic downturn.

The high street has indeed been hit very hard; however there are a lot of online companies who have not felt the troubles quite as much. Many people in attempts to save money are actually turning to online shopping.

You may already be using PPC such as Google Adwords to advertise your products or services. In which case there a few things that you can change to get more business during the current recession.

Make it easy for customers to buy: You should put a link to your order/buy page, this will increase conversion rates.

Use value keywords: Look to relate your ads to keywords such as bargain, discount, lowest prices etc, this will give you an edge as many people during these times will be attracted by such offers.

Focus your ads on savings: Your ads should be for good deals, similar to the above point, people will more likely buy.

Focus on high performers: The majority of your budget should go to the tried and tested products/services that you know bring you in the most money. If you aren’t sure which products/services are your best then keep a track of how well they do over a period of time, if you have a new product then you should test the water somewhat by putting the ad up at a low rate to see if there is any interest in it.

Also don’t necessarily give up straight away on products/services that aren’t working, instead look into different ways that you can change the ad keywords, test different ways to see if you can get anything from them.

List Building

Getting together a large list of potential customers is more than critical to success with your business.

Using Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites will be of huge help as you look to increase contact with potential customers.

Try creating a weekly or monthly newsletter that you can send out to your previous customers and to people that have signed up. All you need is a newsletter signup form on your website. This is time well spent as you know the people you are contacting have previously used your services/products or are interested in them. This may seem a more than obvious point but you would be surprised at how many sites don’t utilise them.

Automate

Make things easier for yourself and try to automate as much as your business as possible, use automatic check outs and auto responders. Not only does this give your customers an instant response but also leaves you with much more time to do other more important work regarding your business.

Keywords

This should be the most important aspect of marketing your products or services online; you truly need to do your utmost to get your keywords relevant and ranking high. High ranked keywords on search results etc simply mean money in the bank. It may sound obvious but many people over look the sheer significance of getting well ranked keywords.

Niche

If you are in a niche that works, then concentrate on improving and scaling up your promotion within that particular niche.
