How To Curve the Corners of Photos In Adobe Photoshop

Bookmark and Share

By Craig Deane, Blue Ice Web Design Limited

If you are bored of having square edges to your photos and images then there is a way in which you can curve the corners.

You can do this very easily using Adobe Photoshop, below we will talk you through this process step by step.

1. Firstly open the photo that you want to curve the corners of, click file > open and browse to the desired image file and click open. For example purposes we have opened the water lilies photo shown below.

2. If you wish to resize the image for your website e.t.c. then you need to click image > image size, adjust the pixel width and height and click ok.

3. Now that the photo is the right size we can start the process of curving the corners. First it is a good idea to create a copy of the image incase anything goes wrong. Double click the layer name, at this point it will be "Background", rename it to whatever you wish, we have taken the default name of "Layer 0".

4. Then right click “Layer 0” and click duplicate layer. A dialog box will open asking for a new name of the layer, we kept the default "Layer 0 copy" and left the destination document on the current one.

5. To the left of the layer names is a small eye icon, clicking this will hide a layer, we want to hide the original layer so that we just work on the copied layer. Click the eye icon left of "Layer 0" to hide it. You will still see the photo as it was but this will be only the copied version.

6. Now select the visible layer, in our case it is "Layer 0 copy", the layer name area will be highlighted blue. Under the layer names are a row of icons, one looks like a camera, hovering over it and a small box will appear letting you know it is "add layer mask". You need to click this, you will then notice a white box appear next to the layer name.

7. Again select the layer and again hover over the camera like icon, this time a box will appear saying "add vector mask". As before select this and you will now notice another white box has appeared next to the layer name.

8. Now we need to select the rounded rectangle tool, select the tools icon from the left menu and then select the rounded rectangle tool at the top. You can also set the curve radius by entering different values into the radius box. You can draw out the shape to test the radius, just be sure to step backward or undo by selecting edit > undo/step backward.

9. To the left of the rounded rectangle tool you will see three icons, hover over them, they are "shape layers", "paths" and "fill pixels", it is important that you select the "shape layers" icon. Next click the right white square that appeared next to your layer name, it should then have a black border around it.

10. Now simply draw your rounded rectangle onto your photo, release and the edges you didn’t cover with the shape will be cut away.

11. You can now save the image, if anything went wrong, remember you have the copy already in the layer palette to start again.
