Selecting A Memorable Domain Name

One of the first things to think about when starting a company is a company name, after all this is the name that people will need to identify and recognise.

However if you are building a website to promote or do business with then you should think about the domain name at the same time. Many companies think of a great name for a company but then perhaps can’t use it as the domain name as it is perhaps already taken or too long for a domain name.

In this article we will try to give you some tips on choosing a great domain name for your company.

Many companies use their company name as their domain name; this is a good way of keeping clarity and also an easy way for users to find your company online without knowing your domain name. Many users will type your company into the address box and then .com etc in the hope of finding your site.

If your company name is of a length that would not make this inappropriate then this may well be the best way of selecting a domain name. Your domain name should be no more than 67 characters long, however it is suggested to select one that is no more than 30 or 40, the reason being the user has to type this address in and also remember it.

This is why it is a good idea to think of the company name and domain name at the same time, try to think of something that is catchy but also not too long. Personally I would recommend a domain name that isn’t longer than 24 characters.

Is your domain available?

Type into the address bar your desired domain, if it is taken then you should think about coming up with a different name.

Dashes in domain names

If your company name is Aztec consulting you might want a domain name like “aztec-consulting.com”, the dash is a good way of separating the words which will allow the search engines to take in the two different keywords which helps with the optimization of your site. However search engines are getting better and thus this will no longer be necessary in the future, also users may forget about the hyphen and type the address in one word and then miss your site.

Camel case is when you can type the whole word but it appears as though the inner letter is capitalised, so it would be “AztecConsulting”, this allows the user to type the address in one word but will appear as above.

Summary

In summary you want a domain name that is the same as your company name or similar, thinking of the two at the same time will help greatly.

When you have your name, read it out and make sure it would give the user who has no knowledge of your company an idea of what you offer already. Then you can get onto a domain name registration site and register it with hosting.

Good luck!
